The global aluminum recycling industry offers abundant potential for growth and long-lasting change. As companies increasingly commit to becoming more sustainable, reducing their carbon footprint and supporting decarbonization efforts, aluminum recycling is a catalyst of transformation. The use of recycled aluminum not only delivers environmental benefits but also improves operations for aluminum producers, processors and recyclers.

To help recyclers and processors unlock the vast benefits associated with recycling aluminum, TOMRA has published a new free-to-download eBook titled “The Green Revolution: A guide to the future of aluminum recycling”. The eBook provides an overview of the current global market for aluminum and stresses the need for recyclers to understand the sources and composition of the aluminum they are recycling.

Up to 39 million tons of CO2 emissions could be avoided

With European Aluminum and its Circular Aluminum Action Plan predicting that an increase in aluminum recycling rates could lead to CO2 emission savings of up to 39 million tons per year by 2050 (Brochure: European aluminium circular aluminium action plan), aluminum recycling is set to play a key role in decarbonization.

Unprecedented demand for aluminum will transform how we make use of our precious resources, with secondary aluminum becoming a crucial means of mitigating global warming.

TOMRA’s new eBook also highlights the range of sensor-based sorting technologies that can be used and configured to create a clean aluminum fraction based on recyclers’ specific requirements. The latest cutting-edge sensor-based sorting technologies can create furnace-ready aluminum for use in the manufacture of aluminum products for high-end applications, helping to close the loop on aluminum.

Advanced sorting technology to be showcased at ALUMINIUM Düsseldorf

During the ALUMINIUM Düsseldorf 2024 trade show, TOMRA demonstrated how modern technologies can support the industry’s efforts to decarbonize and achieve a circular economy for aluminum.

A key highlight at TOMRA’s stand has benenthe AUTOSORT™ PULSE: the company’s latest breakthrough innovation in the aluminum sector. This cutting-edge sorting solution, built on TOMRA's proprietary Dynamic LIBS technology, closes another gap in the industry's path towards material circularity by enabling the precise sorting of aluminum scrap by alloys, including 5xxx and 6xxx alloy classes.

In addition, TOMRA will showcase its established X-TRACT™ solution which sorts by atomic density and allows for the accurate separation of aluminum from heavy metals. A leading system in aluminum sorting for more than two decades, the X-TRACT™ was recently upgraded with a new design and enhanced functionalities in 2022.
