Following the opening of a new test center at its site in Mülheim-Kärlich last year, the world’s leading manufacturer of sensor-based sorting technology for recycling has undertaken a 1.5-year construction project to expand the office complex. The expansion was needed to accommodate TOMRA Recycling’s growth, which shows no sign of slowing. A doubling of the workforce since 2019 reflects that: The recycling market is booming, and new regulations are making efficient sorting systems increasingly important.
TOMRA Recycling, part of the Norwegian parent company TOMRA, is positioning itself as a top employer; with 4.5 stars on Germany’s leading job evaluation platform Kununu, the company is among the best rated in the entire country.

Open and communicative: The interiors reflect the corporate spirit
The new 5-story building, now the tallest in the area, doesn’t just stand out because it looks bright and contemporary. If you take a look inside, you will find an open plan concept that reflects the modern corporate culture of TOMRA Recycling.
The various departments are divided into individual areas, with open access to the other parts of the company. Between the individual departments are closed-off areas, around 250m², which can be used for meetings and provide a space for brainstorming sessions. A total of 170 new individual workspaces have been created.

“It was important for us to reflect our open and flexible way of working in the new office. The culture here at TOMRA Recycling is informal, everyone is on an equal footing, everyone is approachable. This was taken into account when planning our new space. I’m really happy with the outcome.” says Dr. Volker Rehrmann, EVP, Head of TOMRA Recycling.
The employees located at the Mülheim-Kärlich site, more than 500 out of over 1000 located worldwide, enjoy flexible and modern working practices. New Work is not just a buzzword at TOMRA, it has been put into practice for years through a high level of trust in each employee and remote working is an integral part of this.
Right next to the new building is the parking garage, which was expanded in 2023 to include a large photovoltaic system and 40 charging stations for electric cars, which can be used cost free by employees.
More stringent recycling standards, new political stipulations and an increased awareness of the impact of waste on the environment: The future promises continued strong growth for TOMRA Recycling.
