Innovation and sustainability in lithium-ion
battery recycling

Battery recycling plays a crucial role in sustainable development and resource conservation. Lithium-ion batteries in particular, which are used in electric vehicles and many other devices, contain valuable metals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt.

These raw materials are only available in limited quantities and are often mined under environmentally harmful and catastrophic human conditions. Only through effective recycling can these materials be recovered and reused, reducing dependence on new raw materials and minimizing the environmental footprint of battery production.

Battery recycling technology from Barradas

Barradas GmbH has established itself as one of the leading providers in the field of environmental technology and lithium-ion battery recycling. With its many years of experience and comprehensive expertise, the company is setting new standards. State-of-the-art recycling plants from Barradas, e.g. at Stena Recycling AB in Halmstad/Sweden and LIBREC AG in Biberist/Switzerland, are specialized in shredding lithium-ion batteries and breaking them down into their components. This produces the “black mass”, which contains the valuable raw materials. In further processing steps, these can then be extracted by the customers of the black mass and fed back into the cycle, e.g. for the production of new battery materials.

The systems developed by Barradas can process these batteries on an industrial scale of up to 4 t/h and thus make a significant contribution to the circular economy. Innovative technologies such as inert shredding, the use of specially developed vacuum dryers and efficient delamination processes for the gentle processing of battery materials enable high efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of recycling. Barradas is justifiably proud of this state-of-the-art technology with a recovery rate of up to over 98 % and a purity of the black mass in “Champions League quality” (“the original tone of the black mass processors”).

Becoming a pioneer in battery recycling

Barradas GmbH, founded in 1997, offers comprehensive solutions for waste treatment, recycling and resource recovery. With a strong focus on sustainability, Barradas has built up an excellent reputation. Its other business areas include the development and construction of recycling plants for refrigerators, WEEE and used tires, as well as its own proven shredding technology for a wide range of applications.

In 2018, Barradas GmbH made the transition to plant engineering and achieved its international breakthrough with its first recycling plant delivered to France. Since then, plant engineering has become increasingly important for the company and its customers. Through continuous research and development, the company minimizes the ecological footprint of its customers and implements efficient, environmentally friendly solutions. With new plants and innovative processes, Barradas GmbH contributes to protecting the environment and securing raw materials, strengthens the local economy and creates jobs. Barradas GmbH is proud to be part of this important development and to lay the foundations for a more sustainable future through its work.
