Recycling of end-of-life vehicles

At the end of a useful life, vehicles are used as a source of spare parts and to recycle the remaining material. In the USA alone, 12 to 15 million vehicles reach the end of their life each year, which has led to a strong vehicle recycling industry.

The process of car recycling is quite complex. All fluids must be drained, battery, airbags and catalytic converters are removed. Valuable parts are removed manually (engine, gearbox, etc.). What to do with the rest of the body? HAMMEL Recyclingtechnik GmbH has developed a complete mobile metal processing system for shredding and sorting these materials.

In the first step, the car bodies are shredded using the HAMMEL primary shredder. The well-known RED GIANT – now available with a new, modern design and special features – is equipped with a powerful CAT C18 with the latest STAGE 5 emissions standard with approx. 563 kW. The feed of the input material is optimal thanks to the two special shafts that run into each other.

After shredding, the raw material is transported to a mobile metal screen. The integrated vibrating finger sieve separates the material <150 mm. The oversize can be transported back to the shredder. The screened material passes through the vibrating trough to the magnetic drum to separate ferrous and non-ferrous material.

For further processing, the iron parts are sent over a sorting table. Here, inclusions and impurities are sorted out manually, producing a clean iron fraction that can be ideally used for further marketing.

The non-ferrous parts go to a semi-mobile MWA 1000 E eddy current separator, which sorts the material into aluminum and shredder light fractions. The HAMMEL metal system can also be completed with sorting belts for manual sorting of stainless steel, copper and other materials. Clean end products are also created here for optimal marketing.

All components are connected to each other and the electrical machine components are powered by a generator, which is offered separately. The advantage is that this system is “mobile” and can be installed anywhere. The main goal when processing end-of-life vehicles with the HAMMEL metal system is the simple and cost-effective separation of different material flows.

There is the opportunity to see the HAMMEL shredders live and in action – at the next demo event of HAMMEL Recyclingtechnik GmbH from March 12-16, 2024 at the company premises in Bad Salzungen.
